Born in 1939 on Long Island, New York, Adi Da Samraj describes His earliest Life as an existence of constant and unmitigated Spiritual “Brightness”. His observation, still in infancy, that others did not live in this manner led Him to undertake an awesome quest—to discover why human beings suffer and how they can transcend that suffering. His quest led Him to a confrontation with the bleak despair of post-industrial Godlessness, to a minute examination of the workings of subjective awareness, to discipleship in a lineage of profound Yogis, to a period of intense Christian mysticism, and finally to a Re-Awakening to the perfect state of “Brightness” He had known at Birth.

In The Knee of Listening, Avatar Adi Da also reveals His own direct awareness of His “deeper-personality vehicles”—the beings whose lives were the direct antecedents (or the “pre-history”) of His present human Lifetime—the great nineteenth-century Indian Realizers Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda.

Finally, Avatar Adi Da describes the series of profound transformational events that took place in the decades after His Divine Re-Awakening—each one a form of “Yogic death” for which there is no recorded precedent. Altogether, The Knee of Listening is the unparalleled history of how the Divine Conscious Light Incarnated in human Form, in order to grant everyone the possibility of Ultimate Divine Liberation, Freedom, and Happiness.

As a Conscious “creation”, or by-Me-Embraced condition, “Franklin Jones” began one day while I was crawling across the linoleum floor in a house my parents had rented from an old woman named Mrs. Farr. There was a little puppy, which my parents had gotten for me, running across the floor towards me. I saw the puppy, and I saw my parents. The “creation” of “Franklin Jones” began from that moment. . . . The reason for this gesture was a spontaneous motivation associated with a painful loving of the people around me. It was not merely compassion for them, as if they were poor people I could help. It was a painful emotional and physical sensation in my heart and in my solar plexus…. This spontaneous gesture, this painful loving, this profound sensation, awakened in me and moved me into the body, animated me physically.

—AVATAR ADI DA SAMRAJ

“From the day I first encountered the writings of Adi Da (as Da Free John) in the mid-80s, I knew that I was reading a contemporary religious genius. . . . In my opinion, the total corpus of his twenty-three Source-Texts, including The Knee Of Listening constitutes the most doctrinally thorough, the most philosophically sophisticated, the most culturally challenging, and the most creatively original literature on radical nonduality currently available in the English language.”
