A large-format presentation of Adi Da Samraj’s black-and-white photographic images from the years 2000 and 2001.

Black-and-white photography was the focus of Adi Da’s artistic work from 1998 to 2002. In 1999, He said, “The heart sees in black-and-white.”

On June 22, 2000, a breakthrough event occurred in Adi Da’s photographic art process. He described it as the day He overcame the point-of-view limitations inherent in the camera by keeping the exposure open for long periods of time—letting more light into the camera than is ordinarily permissible. This created what He described as “Bright Field Images”.

2000 was also the first year Adi Da Samraj began using multiple exposures in His photographic work, something He would use for years thereafter as a visual demonstration of artwork that transcends “point-of-view”, which He said was synonymous with “ego”.

Art is an essential response to the conditions of existence, by which limitations are transcended, Reality is Realized, Truth is Realized, Light is Found. Without that activity, there is nothing but this intrusion of changes and death. Art heals. Art restores equanimity. Art must regenerate the sense of well-being. That is its true purpose. When art is useful, it serves this ultimate process of healing, well-being, higher sympathy, and spiritual awakening.

—ADI DA SAMRAJ

“In stark contrast to the cynicism that dominates much contemporary art, Adi Da Samraj’s art is a deeply generous and compassionate gift to its viewers. Through his artwork, Adi Da Samraj is redefining the nature of art, returning art to its ancient, sacred origins.”

—DAVID T. HANSON Former Professor, Rhode Island School of Design

“The ‘instants’ recorded by Adi Da Samraj are the clicks of a train leaving the station of the familiar. Traveling with him you might lose yourself…. As you do this, you will recognize the space of his images as one of your own. The center has shifted. You are in the ‘bright room’. We always were.
